Water treatment FAQs

How can I tell when my pond needs treatment?

Here are some indicators to watch out for:

  1. Water quality issues: Sudden changes in your water, such as cloudiness, foul odours, or an increase in algae growth.
  2. Fish behaviour changes: If your fish are behaving differently than usual, such as gasping at the surface for air or showing signs of stress, it could be a sign of poor water quality and the need for treatment.
  3. Disease outbreaks: If you notice any signs of fish diseases, such as sores, lesions, or unusual behaviour, it is important to treat your pond to prevent the spread of infection.

How often should I use pond water treatments?

When it comes to using pond water treatments, the frequency at which you should apply them depends on various factors. These factors include the size of your pond, the condition of its water, and the specific treatment you are using.

It’s recommended to use pond water treatments on a regular basis to maintain the overall health and clarity of your pond.

Don’t over-treat your pond, as excessive use of pond water treatments can disrupt the natural balance and harm fish. Always start with the recommended dosage and adjust it based on the condition of your pond.

What is the best treatment for cloudy pond water?

There are several treatments that can help clear up cloudy pond water. One of these is our Clear Pond treatment. This is harmless to filters and all species of pond fish, plants and water using wildlife. It rapidly clears green, cloudy, dirty or milky water by clumping together suspended particles. This causes them to sink or become trapped in the filter.

What is the best treatment for green pond water?

Green pond water is typically caused by an overgrowth of algae. One option to remove it is our Green Away treatment. This naturally safe treatment rapidly clears green water caused by suspended algae.

How long does it take for water treatments to work?

The time it takes for pond water treatments to work varies depending on several factors, including the specific treatment product, the size of your pond, and the severity of the issue. Some treatments may show results within hours, while others may take a few days or weeks.

How can I adjust my ponds pH levels?

How can I tell when my fish has a health issue?

It’s important to regularly monitor your pond fish for any signs of health issues. Some common indicators of a fish health problem include:

  1. Changes in behaviour: Look out for fish that are swimming irregularly, staying at the surface or bottom of the pond, or behaving aggressively.
  2. Physical abnormalities: Check for any visible signs of disease or injury on the fish’s body, such as lesions, sores, or discoloration.
  3. Loss of appetite: If your fish suddenly stops eating or shows a decrease in appetite, it could be a sign of a health issue.
  4. Gasping for air: Fish gasping for air at the surface of the water may be experiencing oxygen deficiencies or other respiratory problems.
  5. Erratic swimming patterns: If you notice your fish swimming erratically or struggling to maintain their balance, it could be a sign of a health issue.

Can I use multiple pond fish treatments at the same time?

While it may be tempting to use multiple pond fish treatments, it is generally not advisable.

Different treatments can have different active ingredients and target different conditions. Using multiple treatments simultaneously can increase the risk of chemical imbalances, stress on the fish, and even toxicity.

Can I use treatments for aquarium fish on my pond fish?

This depends purely on whether or not the product states it’s suitable for pond use.

Ponds typically have a larger volume of water and different environmental conditions compared to aquariums. Therefore, choose medications specifically formulated for ponds or those that mention suitability for larger bodies of water.

Always follow the instructions provided on the medication packaging and consult with a fish or pond specialist if you have any doubts.

How do you treat stressed pond fish?

Fish can become stressed in pond environments for various reasons, such as poor water quality, overcrowding, or inadequate nutrition. One way to treat stress is to add our Pond Guardian Tonic Salt.

It’s unique formulation helps to create the perfect environment for your pond fish. This product stabilises pond water conditions, including all the important pH value. All you have to do is simply add it directly to your pond.

Another option is our Stress Away treatment. This should be used as a monthly disease preventative to support your fish when introducing new fish. Or for temperature changes during spring and autumn and times of bad water quality.

How do you treat fish parasites?

Our Anit-Parasite treatment provides fast effective treatment for white spot, flukes and slime disease in pond fish. It should be used when fish are flicking or gasping, have a white cloudy appearance to eyes, skin or gills; or when fish are covered in white spots (salt size).
