Pond Aeration FAQs

What is aeration and why is it important for ponds?

Aeration refers to the process of adding oxygen to a pond’s water. This is crucial for maintaining a healthy pond.

When a pond lacks sufficient oxygen levels, it can lead to problems like algae overgrowth, odours, and even kill fish. Aeration helps in maintaining proper dissolved oxygen levels by promoting water circulation and preventing stagnation.

This not only keeps the pond water clean and clear, but creates a healthy environment for fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria.

What types of ponds benefit from aeration?

Essentially, any pond can benefit from aeration. No matter your pond’s size, it can enhance water quality, prevent stagnation, and improve its overall health. Whether you have a koi pond, backyard water garden or a planted pond, aeration is a core part of your pond’s health.

What size pond air pump do I need?

It’s generally recommended to choose a pump that is capable of circulating the entire volume of water in the pond at least once per hour. For larger ponds or deeper water, you may need a more powerful pump. Be sure to consider factors such as the number of fish in your pond and the presence of plants, as these can also impact the oxygen needs of your pond.

Do I need an air pump if I already have a waterfall or fountain in my pond?

While waterfalls and fountains can help with aeration to some extent, they may not be enough to fully oxygenate the water in your pond, especially if you have a larger pond or lots of fish. Air pumps provide continuous aeration, ensuring that your pond has enough oxygen for fish to thrive. Plus, the bubbles created by air pumps can add a visually pleasing element to your pond, enhancing its overall aesthetics.

Why do the flappers keep getting little holes in them?

Damage can be caused by the unit operating in a dusty environment. Change the air filter pad regularly. Click here for aeration spare parts.

The output of my Koi Air pump has decreased, where can I obtain spares from?

Why is my Koi Air pump so noisy?

The Koi Air pumps have a large motor, which will produce more noise than smaller air pumps.  If the noise level is unacceptable, housing the unit inside a brick outbuilding, such as a garage, rather than a shed, may be preferable.  It is also intended that the majority of the outlets will be utilised.  If you only require one or two outlets, we would suggest that our Pond Oxygentaor Kits may be more suitable for your environment.

What do I do if my Koi Air is noisy?

The Koi Air pumps are very large and designed for use primarily in Koi ponds or very large ponds, which may be heavily stocked and have a high oxygen requirement.  The large motor will produce more noise than smaller air pumps.  If the noise level is unacceptable, housing the unit inside a brick outbuilding, such as a garage, rather than a shed, may be preferable.

In purchasing the pump, it is expected that most of the outlets will be utilised.  If you only require one or two outlets, we would suggest that our Pond Oxygenator Kits may be more suitable for your requirements.
